ROOM tells the extraordinary story of Jack, a spirited 5-year-old who is looked after by his loving and devoted Ma. Like any good mother, Ma dedicates herself to keeping Jack happy and safe, nurturing him with warmth and love and doing typical things like playing games and telling stories. Their life, however, is anything but typical - they are trapped - confined to a windowless, 10-by-10-foot space, which Ma has euphemistically named "Room." Ma has created a whole universe for Jack within Room, and she will stop at nothing to ensure that, even in this treacherous environment, Jack is able to live a complete and fulfilling life. But as Jack's curiosity about their situation grows, and Ma's resilience reaches its breaking point, they enact a risky plan to escape, ultimately bringing them face-to-face with what may turn out to be the scariest thing yet: the real world.

By turns powerful and poignant, and consistently authentic. Works well on every level. Jacob should succeed Tatum O'Neal as youngest Oscar winner. Jack assembling the plastic Legos as a "real" boy is a beautiful symbol of putting his life back together.

An amazing film with stellar performances by Brie Larson and especially Jacob Tremblay as Jack. Covers so many emotional layers:
The parent and parental love creating the child's world and a perceived safe environment.
The guilt of Ma, for what she had to do to survive.
The guilt of her, Joy's, Dad for not being able to protect his daughter.
I love the way the story slowly unfolds through the child's eyes and words. The film uses many subtle techniques to reveal socio-economics, family members personal coping styles, adaptation to such a horrible happening. A fine film.

Beautiful and far-reaching--about perception and imagination. Strength in an overwhelming, difficult situation and collapse once collapse was possible. This film explored human capacity in extreme conditions and then in the complicated world we call normal life, in a way I found moving and revelatory. Amazing!

I could not imagine how this would be adapted to film. It was incredible. The first half was stifling physically but somehow managed to create the magical of the world through Jack's point of view. The second half helps us to process the experience as each character does." There were many other praises from those who had read the book. Example: "I read the book and couldn't figure how they would make an accurate film of it. But they did! The film was great."
